The United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared Manas as a "World Heritage Sight in Danger' in 1992, when the region had been under the threat of extremists and suffering from an acute lack of infrastructure. A UNESCO delegation visited Manas recently and expressed satisfaction regarding the infrastructure facility and environmental study. Natural Heritage Programme specialists of UNESCO at Paris disclosed that the World Heritage Committee will undertake a special expedition to face the present problems and to recover the lost glory of Manas. They expressed that it will take some time to recover the lost glory of the World Heritage Site. A four-member delegation of UNESCO paid a three-day visit to the national park for acquiring information about the present-day problems. The delegation included A Debnet, H Lilian, Prof Rambhuj and SK Srivastav. They had various discussions with officials of the Manas National Park, Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) administration, employees of the concerned departments, and several NGOs. It is worth mentioning that the Park with 2,837 square km along the Indo-Bhutan border was recognized as a sanctuary in 1905.
