The Jaffna Peninsula will be supplied with 24 hour uninterrupted power from early November, Power and Energy Ministry sources said.
The construction of the 36 MW thermal power plant in Chunnakkam has been completed and would be commissioned in early November, a Ministry spokesman said.
According to the ministry source, the smooth functioning of civil administration, commercial activities and domestic industries has led to an increased demand for electricity.
The current supply of electricity cannot meet the demand of over 600,000 people and the Ceylon Electricity Board has to exercise power cuts of one to two hours during peak hours between 6 p.m. to 9 p.m, the sources said.
The total power generated by two private companies and the CEB accounts for 19 MW. The two companies generate 16 MW while the CEB thermal plant at Chunnakkam generates 3 MW. The official said once the new plant is commissioned, the CEB would give new connections to applicants.
