PANJIM: Labour unions in Goa have filed several cases against mining firms and allied industries for large scale suspension and layoff of workers since October 2012, salary cuts, which are against the law, Goa Convention of Workers convener Suhaas Naik said here on Tuesday, urging the government to initiate action against such firms and industries.
justify;">They are involved in discontinuing the services of contractual workers, Naik said, disclosing that there are 15 cases filed with the Central Labour Tribunal against VM Salgaoncar and Company for terminating staff after the suspension of mining operations by the Supreme Court.
The unions under the banner of GCW have demanded that if and when mining resumes, all those workers who are retrenched or suspended from their services should be re-employed along with payment of their pending dues. Naik said that the workers who are under the trade unions get protection, but those who are not part of a trade union are facing the wrath of companies.
“The other crucial issue is about those workers who are working for the contractor who has been subcontracted work in the mines. Many such workers are laid off. We are trying to help those workers too,” Naik said.
The terminations are faced not only by the workers employed with the mining firms but those in the allied industries, said Goa unit chief of Hind Mazdoor Sangh, Govind Bhosle. He claimed that around 130 workers attached to the barge industry have been laid off. “Cases have been filed with the state labour commissioner against these employers,” Bhonsle said. He claimed that for last five to six months, the workers working in the barge industries have not been paid their salaries.”
