The United States will help developing countries develop laws to manage their forests and protect them from illegal logging, Secretary of State Colin Powell says. Announcing a new $19 million Initiative Against Illegal Logging July 28 at the State Department, Powell said the United States also will provide remote sensing technology to poor countries so they can monitor forest activity, and help them implement community-based forest management programs.
