Universal access to toilet facilities

Chennai THE Third Tamil Nadu State Report of the 2005-06 National Family Health Survey says access to a toilet facility is almost universal in Chennai. This even as there is dearth of well maintained public toilets and the social nuisance of public urination in the city . The city accounts for almost cent per cent toilet facility in non-slum areas and about 97 per cent in slum areas. According to the report, access to improved saniatation facility is 38 per cent, which is twice as high for households in nonslums area, and it is 19 per cent for households in slums. It has also been pointed out that 56 per cent of non-slum households belong to the highest wealth quintile compared to one quarter which is 24 per cent of slum households. The report points out that housing conditions are worse in slums than non-slums, though the differences are not very large. The urban housing condition is reasonable as seven out of 10 households use tap water for drinking. Though in non-slum areas 42 per cent of households have water piped into their dwelling, yard or plot compared to 21 per cent in slum areas. In most respects, the city has been found to be better of compared to the urban population in the rest of the State.
