The mystery that has been shrouding the genesis of the reservoir-induced earthquakes in Koyna region in Maharashtra is likely to be unravelled soon. An assurance to this effect has come from Dr. Harsh K. Gupta, Director of Hyderabad based National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI). The development assumes importance as Koyna, which hit the international headlines in December 11, 1967, with the world's largest and most damaging reservoir induced earthquake, has been experiencing tremors off and on, ever since the water began to fill up in the Shivaji Sagar Lake formed by the Koyna dam in 1962.
