With the Congress deciding to hold a rally in Banda on April 30 to highlight the miseries of the people living in Bundelkhand, the Bahujan Samaj Party Government has revived Uttar Pradesh's demand for a special package saying "without this help the region cannot prosper". "The State Government does not have resources of its own to start a special scheme. Still it is doing its best to provide relief to the people of Bundelkhand region. The situation would have eased had the Centre released a special package of `80,000 crore as demanded by Chief Minister Mayawati almost three years back," a party spokesman told The Pioneer on Sunday. The BSP leader said the Chief Minister had personally met Prime Minister in New Delhi and had asked for a special package but the Union Government had not yet released it. He said in these three years the face of Bundelkhand would have changed had the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government released the special package to Uttar Pradesh. "The demand was ignored for political reasons and now the Congress leadership is holding rallies and meetings showing sympathy for the people of Bundelkhand," the BSP spokesman said. Led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, senior Congress leaders including Congress national general secretary Rahul Gandhi would address a rally in Banda on April 30. Congress is projecting this rally as the start of its election campaign for the coming Assembly election in the State. The party's district units have been asked to bring crowd for this rally. "Congress is just shedding crocodile tears for Bundelkhand. The UPA Government, during its first innings, had given a special package to the farmers of Vidarbha. Similar situation prevails in Bundelkhand. Why has the UPA ignored Uttar Pradesh? Only because the BSP is in power here?" the spokesman asked. He said the State Government would send another request to the Prime Minister to release a special package of `80,000 crore so that development could be speeded up in the rugged Bundelkhand region.
