Uranium mining: LYWA submits memo to Syiem

SHILLONG, The Langrin Youth Welfare Association (LYWA) on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to KHADC CEM PN Syiem opposing uranium mining in the state. The organization strongly opposed the tender notice floated by Uranium Corporation of India (UCIL). BS Lyngdoh, president and AS Lyngdoh, secretary of the association in a statement stated, “We have been demanding that the company should forget about uranium mining at Phot Kylleng, Pyndensohiong and Mawthabah in the state of Meghalaya.” The Association along with the people firmly stand together to oppose tooth and nail against the company in allotting tender for the two-lane road project, they said. He felt that if the District Council does not intervene into the matter, there will emerge various unwanted circumstances and the result will be an unpleasant state of affair within Langrin areas in particular and in the state in general. “We urged upon the Council to intervene and not to allow the UCIL to do whatever it feels like,” he said adding that the association requests the KHADC to take strong action against UCIL by not allowing the company to carry out its propose work to mine the Uranium from Phodkylleng Pyndensohiong – Mawthabah within South West Khasi Hills District. The association has also demanded that the KHADC should not issue any NOC to Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL).
