The Centre is so keen to re-do the urban infrastructure that it is holding workshops on the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission at seven state headquarters instead of waiting for state governments to approach it with project proposal. Billed as the single largest Central government initiative in the urban sector, it has a provision of Rs 50,000 crore over the next seven years. The JNNURM will be supporting water supply, sewerage and sanitation, solid waste management, road network, transport, construction of bus and truck terminals, redevelopment of inner city areas, development of heritage areas, preservation of water bodies, slum development. In the first phase, it will be executed in 63 cities.
