The makeover planned for the country's major towns and cities may turn out to be a more ambitious project than originally envisaged. The National Urban Renewal Mission may cover all cities with population of more than 1 million instead of just 35-40 envisaged earlier. As the contours of the proposed mission are being finalised, it is clear over 50 cities may be considered for fast-track redevelopment to make them more liveable. The Centre is expected to step up substantially the total allocation for reforms linked urban development programmes from the next financial year to support this mission to ensure the major towns and cities become engines for growth.
