The World Bank said it has approved US$ 65.33 m credit for the Sri Lanka Dam Safety and Water Resources Planning Project to support the country's efforts to ensure public safety from risks of ageing dams and to manage its water resources. The Government is contributing US$ 6.33 m, the lending agency said. The project will improve the operational efficiency of 80 dams and special attention will be paid to the safety of 32 dams categorised as high risk, the World Bank said. The project will also improve the hydro-meteorological information system, including upgrading 50 hydrometric stations. The credit is from the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank's concessionary lending arm and has 20 years to maturity with a 10-year grace period.
