The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed maximum limits on the amount of cancer-causing benzene found in gasoline. The proposed standards would require refiners to maintain their average 1998-99 benzene levels in conventional and cleaner-burning reformulated gasoline by 2002.
