Worried over the gross misuse of green belts by urban development bodies, the forest department has mooted a comprehensive measure for conservation of urban forest covers of Uttar Pradesh. Till now there was no check on urban bodies and the purpose of its use was changed by them at will on the plea of development. The result was that green belts earmarked for development for recreational purposes in the master plan had been converted for raising housing colonies.
