With the famous "chipko" tradition associated with the Garhwal himalayan forests, it seems to be only poetic justice for the new hill state of Uttaranchal to have the lion's share of the forest wealth. Out of the total dense forest area of 22958 sq km in Uttar Pradesh, 17910 sq km lie in the hilly areas of Garhwal and Kumaon (Uttaranchal).
