Uttarakhand power project gets environment clearance

A 300-MW hydro power project in Uttarakhand received clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests on Monday. The Lakhwar project is located in the Upper Yamuna River Basin in Dehradun district, Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar told The Hindu .
According to the Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL), the project will annually produce 612.93 million units of electricity. The project will provide drinking water and water for irrigation and industrial use. Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh will get drinking water and water for irrigation from the project.
The project had received clearance in 1986 when it was under the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department. Work continued till 1992. The project was later transferred to the UJVNL and a fresh clearance was sought. Mr. Kumar said the cost of the Lakhwar project was about Rs. 4,000 crore and it was expected to be completed by 2019.
