Chipko 2001 coordinator J P Dabral has leveled charges of corruption and mismanagement against Uttaranchal government and the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests at a press conference held at the Press Club of India in the Capital today. He accused Power Grid Corporation, Ministry of Environment and Forests and two private companies which have been awarded the contract for laying high-tension wires from Tehri to Mator, near Meerut, of conspiring with the timber mafia to destroy the forests of the region. Dabral said the people of Tehri Garhwal were prepared to launch a struggle to save the trees.
