THE government may increase the number of days on which vaccines are administered under the State's vaccination drive, Director of Public Health and Medicine Dr P Padmanabhan has said. As of now, vaccines are administered every Wednesday by Village Health Nurses, usually in schools or anganwadis. With the State Government's decision to move the vaccination programme from the villages to the Primary Health Centres, it may be necessary to increase the number of days to two or even three times a week, Dr Padmanabhan said, adding that this model was followed in the health departments of Kerala and Chandigarh. "Right now we are working out a plan to see how accessible the PHCs are to the villagers. Around 80 per cent of the people can come to the PHCs. For the rest, a form of transport will be arranged," he said. In some cases, the village health sub-centre would be used instead of a Public Health Centre. Vaccines would still be administered by nurses, but only under the supervision of a medical officer. A PHC is set up for every 30,000 people and a health sub centre for 5,000 people. Other advantages would be the presence of a doctor in case of an emergency, an op portunity to sensitise mothers on health care and also bring in a paediatrician to examine children, if necessary . The government is planning to bring in the vaccine for Japanese encephalitis in four districts soon, followed by the vaccine for Rubella, to be added to the vaccines administered presently. So far, around 3 crore vaccine injections have been administered in the State.
