In the virgin forests bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, 5,000 crack troops armed with Kalashnikov rifles, mine detectors and satellite surveillance equipment stomp around, with helicopters whitting above a region known as the "Silent Valley"' hunting for one elusive bandit and his group. And environmentalists protest that the forests, home to many rate flora and fauna, are being crushed beneath the national heels of the security forces.
