The district transport department has decided to launch a drive against vehicles flouting pollution norms. The department is planning surprise checks. Moreover, in order to curb the rising air pollution in the city, the department will also set up more emission checking points at different petrol and diesel outlets in the city so that the owners of vehicles can procure pollution fitness certificates without any hassles. Considering these issues, a meeting was organised with the petrol dealers on Tuesday. The decision has been taken in view of the recent directives by State transport department secretary KK Soan to district transport officers (DTOs) last month to ensure that pollution checking drive is regularly carried out. As per the plans, the drive will be carried out to check the rising level of pollution in the city in which the major area of focus will be on heavy vehicles like trucks, trailers and buses which add to the level of air pollution to greater extent. The private pollution testing centers in the city comprising CT Motors Training Institute (Mango), Nag Motor Training Center (Sakchi), and Indira Pandey (Dimna Road, Mango) have already been asked to execute computer pollution certificate. The pollution certificates have to be renewed after every six months. “It is our ambitions plan to help in curbing the pollution. We have decided to involve the petrol dealers in a bid to add more vehicles emission check points in Jamshedpur. As of now, we have only three emission check points in the district which creates problem for vehicle owners to get their pollution fitness certificates as they have to travel far and queue up for hours to get their certificates. We have asked the petrol dealers to join the move,” said East Singhbhum DTO Sanjay Kujur. “We have asked the petrol dealers at today’s (Tuesday) meeting held at my office that we would want at least 15 emission check points in city area. We want to get all the emission check points functional by mid-October,” said the DTO. The surprise crackdown will also be conducted at regular intervals at important points. In case of other State vehicles, a spot fine of Rs. 1,000 would be collected from the driver of the vehicle. First time offenders in both pollution certificates and pressure horn will also have to pay Rs 1000 as fine which would be doubled in case of second time offenders. In case of violation for third time the fitness permit of the vehicle would be cancelled. The transport department will have a database of the offenders.
