The possession of 218 acres of agricultural land in Nagri, 15km from capital Ranchi for establishment of IIM, IIIT and NUSRL campuses by the district administration of Ranch has taken a violent turn on Wednesday when villagers armed with bamboo poles and iron rods clashed with the police that continued for nearly two hours and partially dismantled the boundary walls set up by the managements of the institutes. Two dozen people including rural SP, Ranchi, Aseem Vikrant Minz and two village women sustained grievous injuries, 20 others were injured in the bamboo and brick battle. The district administration said that villagers no longer owned the land for which they had been duly compensated in 1957-58 when the land was acquired for Birsa Agricultue University seed farm. But the villagers refused to accept the claim and said that they had been ploughing this ‘’ fertile’’ land since period of their ancestors. Recently when the acquired land of Nagri was earmarked for setting up the campuses of IIM, IIIT and NUSRL, the villagers resisted the construction of boundary walls. However, the administration with then help of police force had been able to set up walls which were dismantled by the villagers on Wednesday. A high court intervention was required recently to raise the boundary wall which further aggravated tension among the villagers. Disgruntled villagers moved the Supreme Court. But on June 28, the apex court refused to hold the hearing, saying it was a 50-year-old case, which it didn’t “deem fit to reopen”. Meanwhile, All the tribal outfits in the state have decided not to allow the agricultural land in Jharkhand for any projects since a vast barren lands are available for such projects.
