The protest against dumping of garbage at the 90-year-old yard at Sadupperi continued as villagers along with Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) cadre staged a demonstration on Wednesday. As a threat, a few villagers doused themselves with kerosene. There are nearly 18 villages around Sadupperi where the Vellore Corporation has been dumping garbage. The villagers along with the party cadres started to agitate against dumping garbage citing air and ground water pollution and health hazards. On Wednesday, the Corporation tried to dump garbage at Sadupperi with the help of the police department. “Seven lorries of garbage had arrived with police protection to dump the waste. But we stopped the vehicles and 10 persons doused themselves with kerosene to prevent dumping of waste,” K. Kotti alias Kovendan, councillor of Vellore union and district secretary of VCK said. “Garbage has been dumped on 13 acres of land here for over four generations. Villagers have suffered enough and cannot take it any more,” he added. During a meeting held later with the district administration, the villagers told officials that they would not give more time to identify an alternative space. “We have asked them to take up zone-wise garbage disposal points,” he mentioned.
