Villagers start work on cleaning Sutlej river bed

Gidderpindi (Jalandhar), September 18 Fed up of official apathy, residents of about six villages in Gidderpindi area, where floods played havoc recently, today started work on cleaning of the Sutlej river bed. They were led by environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal.
Due to hundreds of sand mounds on the river bed created due to the flood, even a small release of water brings floods to the areas on the bank.
After an ardas today morning, Baba Seechewal and the villagers entered the river bed close to Giddarpindi railway bridge and started clearing the sand mounds. A ditch machine was brought by the Baba, while villagers were asked to bring tractor-trolleys to lift the sand. The surplus sand would be used to strengthen the
