Perturbed by the environmental pollution being caused by a prawn farming company at Kalaignanapuram, villagers of Thulukanakulam and Kalaignanapuram under Vaipar panchayat limits, have sought the intervention of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) officials stationed in Tuticorin to initiate action against the company. The agitating villagers, who approached the TNPCB office here on Tuesday, alleged that letting of untreated waste water from the prawn farm into open land has turned the ground water brackish. According to a petition submitted to the Director of TNPCB as a huge amount of brackish water was seeping into the ground, the groundwater had become unfit for human consumption. Hence, the poor villagers were forced to buy water, a pot of which was being sold at Rs. 5. They also claimed that though they had petitioned Collector M. Ravikumar on October 8 no action was taken.
