As a result of various persuasions by the Government of Goa, the Government of Maharashtra, has decided to stop the work on the Virdi dam. In the second week of May , 50% of the machinery was shifted from the site. A team of officers visited the site on May 21 and observed that only the protection works for monsoon diversion and pre-monsoon measures was in progress, Government of Maharashtra had envisaged construction of dam on Haltar nullah, from 1 km from the point of entry of the river from Maharashtra into Goa. The issue was discussed at various levels and during the meeting of the Chief minister of Goa and Maharashtra on April 26, 2006, it was brought out that Goa has no serious objections to build a dam as it involved no outside the basin diversion and also Maharashtra was to consider taking up the project as a joint venture for the benefit of two States and allowing Goa to divert surplus water to the Anjunem reservoir. During December 2007, it was reported that Maharashtra had started the construction of the Virdi dam. The site was visited by a team from Goa and it was found that the dam axis had been shifted by about 4 to 5 kms upstream. The dam was no longer on the main Haltar nullah as earlier had on Kattika nullah which is a tributary of Haltar river. In the light of the circumstances, letters were written by the Chief Engineer, Water Resources to the Chief Engineer, Government of Maharashtra asking for the details of the project. Since no response was forthcoming, letters were sent by the Chief Secretary, Goa to the Chief Secretary, Maharashtra, in January 2008 and also by the Chief Minister of Goa requesting to stop the work on the project with immediate effect. Chief Minister of Goa took up the issue with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on his visit to Mumbai, who on his part agreed to look into the matter. Accordingly a team of officials led by Secretary(Water Resources) met the Secretary(Water Resources), Government of Maharashtra and apprised them of the various issues concerning the project. It was also decided that a team of officials led by the Chief Engineers of both the States will visit the site of Virdi dam and also the Haltar Nullah and suggest the measures to be adopted for the same. In the meanwhile Maharashtra Project Authorities were requested to stop the work in the Virdi dam. As informed by Government of Maharashtra, the discussions on the Virdi dam would be held with Government of Goa during the months of July/August, 2008, for deciding on the matter.
