Srikakulam/Nizamabad/ Kurnool, Sept. 16: Officials are on high alert following the surge of flood waters in Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers because of heavy rains in neighbouring Orissa. There are fears that that it would cause another flood in the town. Around 60,000 cusecs of water had reached the Gotta Barrage by evening and 22 gates have been lifted.
Meanwhile all the gates were opened at the Thotapalle reservoir as 45,000 cusecs of water entered Nagavali river. The district collector, Mr N. Srikanth, deputed 12 relief teams and also set up a control room. People living in low lying areas have been asked to move to cyclone relief centres.
Meanwhile, two pregnant women were rescued from Kurthi village of Pitlam mandal in Nizamabad, which was surrounded by floodwaters of the Manjeera river on Tuesday. Villagers informed district officials that the two women, Mrs Sayavva and Mrs Vimala, were marooned and boats were immediately dispatched to rescue them. They were later shifted to the government area hospital at Banswada.
Irrigation officials have lifted 14 crest gates of the Nizamsagar project after the inflow of water touched 60,000 cusecs. This led to the inundation of the village downstream. The river joins the Godavari further on. The Nizamabad district collector Mr. B. Ramanjaneyulu, told this newspaper that no village other than Kurthi had been flooded because of the release of water.
Elsewhere, reservoirs on the Krishna river also registered huge inflows. The Srisailam reservoir touched 884.80 feet against the full reservoir level of 885 feet. Officials opened seven crest gates to release water. This is the first time this season that seven gates have been opened.
