Hyderabad, July 13: With increasing power shortage, state government at last has started looking at non-conventional energy sources like solar and wind power to ease the burden on traditional power generation. From existing 2 MW capacity of wind mills, state government has finalised plans for 1000 MW in coming five years period. With the introduction of more liberal solar energy policy, government is expecting 1.5 gigawatt solar photo voltaic modules coming into operation. The country's biggest solar power generation facility is set to start it's operations at Visakhaptnam by the Velankini group. This unit will subsequently have a capacity to produce 500 million Solar energy Wafers, 1,500 MW PV cells and 1,500 MW of PV modules per annum during the next five years. Fab city, which was originally planned for semi conductor chip manufacturing, has now turned out to be the capital of solar energy with more than 11 companies agreeing to open their manufacturing facility here. XL Telecom and Energy, KSK Surya Photovoltaic Ventures, Solar Semiconductor and Surana Ventures Ltd. have already started their construction of units in Fab city and are expected to start commercial operations by the year end. With the rising fuel prices and severe power shortage, a demand has emerged for a ready market. This amrket would be available for energy efficiency products and alternative energy such as solar energy. "We have already released a investor friendly wind energy policy and are examining incentives for solar energy products." said Mohd Ali Shabbir, the Minister for Energy. Interestingly, the ministry of non-conventional energy has been doling out large number of incentives to promote solar energy. But due to lack of awareness among the domestic and commercial power among the consumers for these subsidies it has been playing a spoil sport. For example, if one wanted to construct a solar building, which used solar power at the maximum level, they could avail upto Rs 50 lakh subsidy (10 per cent of total construction cost) and Rs 2 lakh for preparing detailed project report (DPR) from the ministry. Solar water heaters, domestic lights, and others are eligible for incentives from the government ranging from 2 to 85 per cent of the total cost. The government is planning to extend the benefits to private establishments too.
