Vizag under anthrax scare

DC CORRESPONDENTS HYDERABADNISAKHAPATNAM March 21: The state health department has dispatched rapid response medical teams to Vishakapatnam agency areas where 15 to 20 cases of Cutaneous Anthrax were confirmed. A team of microbiologists and skin specialists sent there have confirmed the cases as Cutaneous Anthrax afflicted. The director of health, Dr Ramesh Chandra, said, "Ten teams comprising health experts are camping in the five villages in tribal areas. The severelyaffected villages fall under the Munchingput mandal." "The Anthrax has spread as villagers consumed infected beef. Those who underwent treatment were sent home," Dr Chandra said. He dispelled fears that the disease would spread. "We are distributing antibiotics to the villagers, while the officials of the animal husbandry department have started vaccinating cattle," he disclosed. The Vishakapantam district medical and health officer, Mr J. Sarojini, camped in the affected areas.
