Wapda has stopped further filling of Tarbela and Mangala dams and is discharging 0.271 million cusecs water from various rim stations to meet water demands of the provinces for Kharif crops. Wapda sources told Business Recorder here on Monday that water inflows in rivers Indus, Kabul, Jhelum and Chanab have decreased during the last week of July. Consequently, the Indus River System Authority which regulates and distributes surface water among the four provinces had asked the stakeholders to cut their water demand by 15 percent for next ten days. Irrigation representatives of Punjab, Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan held a meeting with Irsa Chairman Bashir Dahir in Islamabad on Monday and declined to reduce their water demand as growth of three main crops cotton, rice and sugarcane were at crucial stage. Punjab irrigation sources told Business Recorder that Irsa has agreed to release additional water from Tarbela and Mangla dams to meet all demands of the provinces. They said as per usual practice the Tarbela dam on river Indus is not preferred to be filled up during early Kharif period. The Mangla catchment of Jhelum comprises of low hills and is outside the influence of monsoon. It starts rising in March/April due to snow melt which finishes by middle of June. The hydrology of the river is such that if Mangla is not filled up to 80 percent of the storage by the end of June then the reservoir will not be filled up. They said that water level at Tarbela Dam was 1508.90 feet about 42 ft below its maximum conservation level of 1500 ft. The water level at Mangla Dam was recorded at 1180 feet which was 140 feet higher than the dead level of 1040 feet.
