Nagpur: With increasing concern of the impact of pollution in the city, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) health department imposed a penalty of Rs5,000 on a housing society for burning waste in the open. This is the first such action of levying penalty by NMC in the recent past as burning of waste in the open is banned. After a series of complaints, the Lakadganj zone on Monday morning imposed a fine of Rs5,000 on MB Town on Bhandara Road. Lakadganj health department officials told TOI that on Monday morning the zone office received video evidence of a security guard and a resident burning garbage outside the society. The official claimed that in the recent past NMC had received complaints every alternate day that the society collects and burns waste in the open. "We carried out a spot inspection and found burning waste. The society was penalized and warned not to burn waste in the open in future," the officials said, adding the society has been asked to deposit the fine within three days. Rajesh Puglia, a resident of Wardhaman Nagar, said burning of waste is due to irregular lifting of garbage by NMC.
