The local voluntary organisation, Waste Warriors, conducted two clean-up drives in Dalanwala on the weekend. A total of nine teachers from Maple Bear School accompanied the organisation’s CEO Jodie Underhill and three members of Waste Warriors staff to clean a section of Circular Road. The group collected 237 kg of organic waste, 45 kg of non-recyclable and 5 kg of recyclable waste. The students of the primary school have made cards requesting local residents to keep the area clean and these cards will be distributed on Monday.
Eleven pupils and two teachers from Colonel Brown’s School, led by project assistant Shraddha Zende cleaned the area near their school and collected 20 kg of non-recyclable and 11 kg of recyclable waste including broken glass. The clean-up drive highlighted the extensive amount of litter that accumulates around ice-cream vendors carts.
The NGO will be encouraging school principals to speak to their students and the ice-cream sellers that sell their wares outside their school gates about the importance of using dustbins. Colonel Brown students will also be going out into the community to raise awareness with ice-cream vendors and their customers.
The clean-ups were organised as part of the Dalanwala Transformation Project launched in December 2014 in collaboration with the Dalanwala Resdidents Welfare Association. As part of the program, residents and schools are being encouraged to maintain the cleanliness of their perimeter in a bid to clean up the colony.
