Water and sanitation get priority

For parched Delhiites, the budget this time promises a more comfortable year, even if the summer months may not be its target. With outlay of Rs 1,507 crore the government hopes to improve water supply and sanitation in the city. However, several of the schemes and plans mentioned in the budget have been in the pipeline for some years now and it remains to be seen whether they will see light of day this fiscal. Minister of finance Dr A K Walia has termed water conservation one of the government's top priorities for which four waste water treatment plants at Haiderpur, Wazirabad, Bhagirathi and Chandrawal plants have been commissioned. The plants should be ready by September. However, by Delhi Jal Board's estimates earlier, three of these plants were supposed to be commissioned by June itself. The interceptor sewage treatment that was discussed last year has found mention again. The Rs 4,000-crore project was awarded to M/s Engineers India Ltd at the end of last year and a study is in progress to ascertain its viability.
