Water in 718 villages found to be contaminated

NAGPUR: Zilla Parishad's water quality programme has revealed that water in 718 villages in the district was contaminated while water in 350 villages was without fluoride and reports of remaining villages are awaited.
Zilla Parishad organised workshop on Water Quality Control at its hall on Monday. Data of water quality programme was revealed in the workshop. Guardian minister Chandrashekar Bawankule was present as chief guest. North Nagpur MLA Milind Mane, Umred MLA Sudhir Parwe, Zilla Parishad president Nisha Sawarkar, chief executive officer Kadhambari Bhagat and others were also present.
As per data, 3,655 water samples were collected from villages, of which various types of chemicals were found in 2,752 samples. Members of Zilla Parishad raised questions on water quality programme. They informed programme were conducted without intimating the members and also exposed various types of lacunae.
Bawankule directed the Zilla Parishad administration to ensure detailed study of water in the villages. "Study sources of water, contamination in them and come up with detailed analysis," he said.
Bawankule also asked the administration to clean 1,480 overhead water tanks situated in various parts of the district.
Bawankule directed the administration to ask gram panchayats to hold mass tree plantation drive. "State government set target of plantation of two crore trees this year. Two trees should be planted for every house in all villages," he said.
