A revised draft for National Water Mission (NWM) that provides a major thrust on water management plan has gone to Prime Ministers Office for final clearance. Sources said that the revised draft has identified five major areas to create a sustainable and viable roadmap for national water management in the wake of the crisis which the process of climate change could inflict on water resource availability in the country. Sources said the Ministry expected prompt intervention by the PMO for implementation of the revised draft. The Ministry said that the draft was revised to incorporate suggestions made at a workshop earlier this year after intensive consultations and discussions with State Governments and other stake-holders. The five goals that emerged in the revised draft were: Creation of comprehensive water database in public domain and reliable assessment of the impact of climate change on water resources; Promotion of citizen and State action for water conservation, augmentation and preservation; Focused attention on over exploited areas; Increasing water use efficiency by 20 per cent; and Promotion of basin level integrated water resources management. Ministry sources said that a roadmap on the basis of the five areas had to be created for more equitable distribution of water, minimising its wastage while taking care of its conservation through an integrated water resource management under the NWM. Incidentally, the earlier draft was also revised as not only the number of stake-holders emerged were huge during the workshop, but the roadmap could not be completed without including issues which involved several Ministries.
