Bacteriological tests on samples of drinking water, taken from diarrhea-affected locality of Ellenabad town, have revealed that the water being supplied by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department was unfit for human consumption. Dr Pramod Sharma, in charge in the Community Health Centre, Ellenabad, said out of the eight samples of drinking water taken from the locality, reports for four have been received. All the four samples have been found unfit for human consumption due to the presence of chloroform bacteria in water. Reports in terms of four other samples are expected soon, he said. Earlier, 50-odd samples of drinking water taken from the locality had tested negative for orthotolidine test, indicating that no chlorination of drinking water had been done before its supply to people. A child had died and over 100 people were taken ill after diarrhea spread in Ward 15 of Ellenabad last week.
