Residents of nearly 40 villages in the Siwani block of Bhiwani district, Haryana have been facing the wrath of nature for the past eight years. Scanty or no rainfall leading to repeated crop failures year after year has forced the villagers to migrate to other places or resort to desperate measures. For instance, a number of farmers have been felling green trees standing in their fields in order to earn a livelihood. Many others have migrated to the nearby cities or other places to work as labourers. A visit to some villages under the block revealed that acute water scarcity and shortage of animal fodder were the main difficulties being faced by the villagers. The state government had released a special grant for providing animal fodder, but the villagers allege that it has not been distributed properly to them.
