March 3: The city is likely to face severe water shortage as a result of the rapid growth in infrastructure, sources said. "The utilisation of ground water has increased since the last four years. But, there has been no increase in the water table in the city," said Mr N. Srinivasu, the additional director of the ground water department. "A large number of bore wells are being dug by the infrastructure companies to fulfil their water requirement for construction. This has resulted in increased power consumption too," he added. "For any construction, it is enough to dig 100 ft to find water but now people have started digging more than 1,000 ft to get more water. This not only affects the environment but it also pollutes the water and once the water is polluted it's very difficult to purify it," said Mr Srinivasu. The rainfall in the last three years has not been enough to replenish the groundwater level, he added. In addition to this, the water is being polluted due to sewage, Mr Srinivasu, added.
