Residents of Tiruvottiyur Municipality may soon be relieved of their water woes as a comprehensive water supply scheme is set to take off in a few months. The Rs.70-crore project is awaiting funds from the Centre under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The detailed project report, prepared taking into account the requirement of the local body, was recently submitted to Chennai Metrowater that would be the implementing agency for the project. At present, residents of Tiruvottiyur have to make do with 25 lakh litres of water, which is provided once in four days either through tankers or hand-pumps. An official of the municipality said that at present, residents were being provided with 15 litres per capita daily (lpcd) of water as against the World Health Organisation's norms of 135 lpcd. He said that the proposed scheme would cover a population of 2.25 lakh in the local body and aims to provide 155 lpcd of water. About the scheme, he said that overhead tanks and underground tanks would be constructed in six zones, including Jothi Nagar and Ellaiyamman Koil Street, to supply water through a pipeline covering a distance of 172.7 km. Nearly 23,000 households would be covered by the scheme. While 50 per cent of the project cost would be sanctioned as grant under JNNURM, the remaining cost would be provided as loan by Tamil Nadu Urban Finance Infrastructure Development Corporation, the official added. The execution period of the project is 18 months. Once funds are sanctioned, work order would be issued in a few months, he added.
