Water shortage: wheat and sunflower crops badly damaged

The crops of wheat and sunflower have been severely damaged due to the shortage of water in the canals. Most of the canals in southern Punjab are closed nowadays. Farmers are facing lot of difficulty due to this situation. The production is also expected to be low due to this situation. On the other hand, due to continuous outage of electricity, it becomes also impossible to get water through tube wells. The staff of irrigation department is stealing water from the tube wells with the support of influential people. People have demanded of the higher authorities of irrigation department to take serious notice of this situation. It is also reported from some areas of southern Punjab that the staff of irrigation department treats the canals as their personal property. They gave water to those only whomsoever they want. The farmers have demanded from the chief engineer Multan division to take strict action against such corrupt officials. Copyright Business Recorder, 2008
