Water supplies 'better with government help'

Water services are better provided by governments, or with heavy government involvement, rather than mainly by the private sector, a meeting of political leaders from around the world has concluded. The World Water Forum, which brought together representatives from nearly 150 countries to Mexico City to discuss the problems of water supplies, concluded: "Governments have the primary role in promoting improved access to safe drinking water." Private-sector companies have been pushing for a greater role in many regions. However, some governments and organisations are concerned that without proper oversight from the authorities such projects can fail.
