By S Lalitha, DH News Service, Bangalore: To reduce pollution emissions, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) plans to incorporate sophisticated filters and use diesel-ethanol in the 600 buses of the Mysore urban division under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) project, an international initiative to preserve the environment. By early September World Bank will sanction Rs 14.3 crore for implementation of the project. M A Saleem, Director, Security and Vigilance, KSRTC, said, "Retro fitment of diesel particulate filters and flame arrestors will be done for the first time for buses in the State.' This along with the usage of diesel ethanol blends as fuel will reduce particulate matter by 20 to 46% and reduce smoke up to 70%, he said. The levels of nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide too will be considerably reduced. These plans figure in the just-completed Detailed Project Report for the Mysore bus division. "These are measures to prevent congestion and pollution in Mysore before it gets too late. The City is growing very fast and we want to prevent what has happened in Bangalore to Mysore,' Saleem said. Mysore is the only city in Karnataka selected under the GEF. Bangalore was also recommended by KSTRC but it was not selected, he added. Ajmer, Hyderabad, Raipur, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jalandhar, Indore and Trivandrum are the other cities. Intelligent Transport System is another measure that will be introduced under GEF, the Director said. The project will introduce technology in road transport through the LED screens at bus depots announcing the arrival status of buses. It would also be possible to track the movement of buses from the control rooms as the buses would be equipped with Global Positioning System and Global Positioning Radio System.
