It's conflict played out in forests all over the country, from Mumbai's Sanjay Gandhi National Park to Kerala's Periyar sanctuary Communities which live in and around forests tap their resources for food and fuel, but in doing so, may deplete the natural habitats. The deep divide among conservationists on the role of people in wildlife protection came to the fore at the recent international Bombay Natural History Society seminar on threatened species. A sense of threat about the future of Indian wildlife dominated the conference. Most top conservationists felt the only way to preserve the remaining pristine forests and wild habitats is to isolate them from human habitation.
