Some developing countries have become dumping grounds for other nation's waste, as the cost of disposal has risen round the world and developed countries seek alternatives to landfill, a study has found. Waste is now a high value global industry. The municipal waste market in Organisation for Economic Co-operat ion and Development countries alone is valued at 120bn, according to a survey of the world's waste markets by Cyclope, commissioned by Veolia Environmental Services. Industrial waste is of even higher value, at about $147bn for most of the developed world.
