The first green Commonwealth Games will have a unique system of air quality forecasting and research (SAFAR) that has been installed by the ministry of earth sciences (MoES). The MoES has set up 11 air quality monitoring stations, 35 automatic weather in NCR along with GPS sound observations and Doppler weather radar that will permit air quality forecasting for the first time in India. New Delhi will be the first city in the country to be able to make 24-hour advance forecasts for criteria pollutants, namely ozone, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, particulate matters, benzene, toluene, xylene and black carbon. India will be among a few developing nations to take this big leap forward. The MoES has made elaborate arrangements to monitor, forecast and showcase the air quality and weather information on several locations in Delhi which will cover most of the competi tion venues prior and during the Games. Pusa (IITM Delhi), Yamuna Sports Complex, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, M. Dhyan Chand National Stadium, Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex, Thyagaraj Sports Complex, Commonwealth Games Village, University of Delhi, IGI Airport (T3), Talkatora Garden (covering Talkatora and SP Mukherjee stadia), Noida Sector-62 (NCMRWF). This SAFAR project involves four components to facilitate this advance forecasting. This includes the development of emission inventory of air pollutants for NCR and defining air quality index for India, network of 11 air quality monitoring stations equipped with 11 automatic weather stations to provide near real-time air quality information, 3-D atmospheric chemistry transport forecasting modelling coupled with weather forecasting model to provide forecast of air pollutant levels and display of information on LED and LCD screens located at 20 different locations in Delhi in a publicfriendly format.
