Parliament's amendment of the Wildlife (Protection) Act will serve to improve and facilitate efforts at conservation of forests and wildlife. For one, the amended Act provides for more stern action against poachers and others violating wildlife regulations. Under the amended Act, imprisonment for poaching has been increased from one to three years and could be extended up to seven years, depending on the seriousness of the crime. The fine for violating rules has also been doubled to Rs 10,000. The new legislation provides for attachment of the properties of those who have been convicted earlier for violation of wildlife rules...editorial
