Kochi: The Western Ghats people’s forum will stage an agitation in Thiruvananthapuram in the first week of December to press its demand that residential areas, farm lands and estates should be excluded from the purview of the Madhav Gadgil and Kasturirangan reports. The newly-reconstituted forum, which met in Kochi on Wednesday, will also conduct public meetings in Kozhikode, Palakkad, Wayanad and Kottayam. It has also planned agitations and study camps in villages to create awareness on the farmers’ concern of being displaced if the report is implemented in toto. “One of our major demands is that the committee which is going to study the Kasturirangan panel report should have representatives from the farmers community as well,” said Mar Mathew Anikkuzhikkattil, Idukki bishop and chief patron of the forum. The forum also wants a CBI inquiry into the sources of money for environmentalists and various environment protection forums and agencies. Other patrons of the forum, including Kozhimala tribal king Raman Raja Mannan and Swami Swaroopananda were also present at the meeting which elected Fr Sebastian Kochupurackal as the chairman. Along with political parties, the Catholic Church and farmers’ outfits have been protesting against the recommendations of both Madhav Gadgil and Kasturirangan panel reports, citing displacement of people living in upland districts like Wayanad and Idukki.
