With the arrival of summers, reports about forest fires keep pouring in from the Shivalik hills, lower Himalayas and the plains until the outbreak of the monsoon. forest fires are a constant cause of worry as they are a significant factor in the degradation of forests, which have already shrunk considerably. Out of about 75 million ha area officially recorded as forest land, the actual forest cover according to the forest Survey of India is 63.33 million ha. which is equivalent to 19.2 per cent of the total geographical area of the country, whereas the National Forest Policy aims at bringing at least one third of the total area under forest cover for ecological stability.
