Tharuvaikulam fishermen save resources for the future
Tuticorin: In spite of lacking offshore infrastructure facilities at Tharuvaikulam, a coastal village in Tuticorin, the fishermen of Tharuvaikulam have earned a reputation for themselves.
Unlike other coastal villages in Tamil Nadu, these fishermen are playing an exemplary role by adopting an eco-friendly method with gill nets.
The hamlet, which is predominantly occupied by Nadar community, are into fishing after traditional palm-related works and toddy tapping waned.
A.A. Jayapaul, a fisherman and Tharuvaikulam Panchayat president, told The Hindu here on Wednesday that of the total 12,000 population, over 7,000 were engaged in fishing.
