For the first time in the history of forest conservation, women, who live in the fringe areas of the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Thekkady, Kerala, have rendered their service without expecting anything in return. The women, mostly married and having children, come out of their own by taking account the importance and need for conservation and protection of forest. The women groups, styled "Harita Sree", with a strength of about 50, have volunteered their service to the PTR for engaging them in the protection of forest wealth, especially the wildlife and other resources.
