There was a time when people in Hassan, Karnataka could get groundwater even at a depth of 10 feet. Hassan was once rich in this scarce resource - water - and its scarcity was almost unheard of in this part of the State till almost 50 years ago. Probably, taking this for granted, the city administrators started exploiting this natural resource which resulted in a number of tanks being breached indiscreetly.
