The World Health Organisation (WHO) in its latest report has stated that there was a possible risk of water-borne disease spreading in the areas affected by the recent floods.
The Epidemiologists confirmed the possibility of such diseases spreading but stated that no cases have been reported yet.
Dr. Sudath Peries Epidemiologist of the Epidemiology Unit informed that due to floods in the districts of Gampaha, Kalutara, Colombo, Matara, Galle and Puttalam, the water could be contaminated causing the spread of many diseases.
He further elaborated the reason for this was the overflowing of septic tanks and wells at the same time contaminating the water sources.
Drinking water could be tainted with human faecal matter thus making it compulsory that the water should be properly sterilised in order to prevent diseases from spreading. Therefore, wells needed to be properly chlorinated for which the residents could seek the help of the Local Health Inspectors
